Kinoli is an interactive design and development boutique focused on delivering unique interactive experiences. Located in the tech hub of Calgary, Alberta, Canada we have been fortunate enough to have worked on several highly recognized and award winning interactive projects.
We mainly focus on website and interactive development but also work in other areas like iPhone/iOS application development and database driven website development, including ExpressionEngine.
Our past few years in a nutshell
Kinoli is an established web development company with an emphasis in databases, flash, CMSs and even the mobile arena. We love interactivity and have a passion for pushing the development envelope. We seek challenges in what we do, and we're always learning more tricks of the trade. Our client base ranges from local Calgary companies to many interactive firms and companies from across Canada and the United States. We are always looking to work with new companies and to make friends along the way.
In 2005 Kinoli started with just a simple developer out of his condo in downtown Calgary. Since then Jesse has intentioned to keep things small, working with respected designers and developers of the trade when necessary. Of course, his main desire is to keep his clients happy. Kinoli is a full fledged Canadian corporation and is continually taking on new clients.
Jesse Knowles from Kinoli was asked to teach a two-day course on the fundamentals of Adobe Flash.
The AICP Show developed in Flash by Kinoli received an "Official Honoree" distinction at the 12th annual Webby Awards.
The Veer - Rest Stop Flash website (Veer Solus) that Kinoli developed won the Applied Arts award in the self-promotion category.
Kinoli developed two of the main section on the Rolex.com website helping to receive this prestigious award.
The campaign website that Kinoli developed for the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Association (LVCVA) was awarded an Adobe Site of the Day Award. The website was intended to allow visitors to become someone else in Las Vegas, so the website allows visitors to choose the type of character they would like to become. Kinoli animated and developed the website utilizing MVC framework in ActionScript 2.0.
Jesse Knowles received a gold in Interactive Media for the interactive promotional game Dress the Turkey. It has been a viral marketing success story and has been Nationally recognized.
Jesse Knowles was asked to speak at the Washington DC Flash Users Group on the use of tweening in Flash. He demonstrated the way to shape tween (morph) complex objects together over a period of time.
Our clients come to us because they have a problem that they want solved. We are lucky enough to live in a time when their are hundreds of ways to come up with a solution to these problems. Kinoli is an Apple shop, we do consulting for our clients but most of all we develop good looking, fully usable websites.
Kinoli recently worked with Studio Forum to develop a static website for an up and coming oil producer headquartered in Calgary. The website has a unique image scaling technique that stretches to the size of the browser window. The striking images emphasize the work that Wilton Resources does and the content is layed out in a straight forward manner.

This was a brand new website for Trickster Theatre company. They had this idea of connecting schools and students with NGO's to help raise awareness and funds for projects around the globe. The website has several different user groups that have different experiences based on their account type. NGO's are able to add projects that they are working on and schools can get involved with these projects to partner with the NGOs. Schools are also able to create their own projects to get students involved in their communities. We wish the best of luck to Trickster Theatre and hope it is a great success story.Continue reading
Real Simple Magazine partnered with Cooking Light and Purina for a promotion they were putting on in Grand Central Terminal in New York City. They hired Kinoli to develop an iPad application that would be shown on 10 ipads and allow people in the terminal to add magazine photo's, apply filters to them, attach a picture frame to it and submit it to a website that was displayed on a large screen. The photo's were uploaded to the website and the website would automatically reload the most recently submitted photos. It also allowed people to post their creations to their facebook wall.Continue reading
Mobile seems to be getting a leg up on the desktop world these days or at least at Kinoli. We were hired as the web development company to develop a jQuery Mobile website for Calgary Coop. We integrated it into an existing ExpressionEngine environment using jQuery mobile on the front-end to ensure the majority of mobile browsers would have the same experience. It shows store locations, hours for individual stores, featured recipies and even recent flyers.Continue reading
Kinoli was hired to create an iPad application for Charmin. It was a simple application that was used at an event in New Orleans. They created a ficticious booth that represented a bathroom stall. The iPad was mounted on the inside of the door, where the user would tell their strangest bathroom story. The iPad was the perfect solution for this, we got to design it and develop the entire application. It even stored the video recordings on the hard drive so the staff at Charmin will now be able to do promotional marketting with them.Continue reading
After completing ARC Resources' mobile website last fall, ARC hired us to develop an ExpressionEngine website that would replace their existing website. A lot of challenges were in place including complex navigation, custom interactive mapping, management of both mobile and desktop from a single location and the need for load times to be tiny. All of which were accomplished and in the end we enjoying working with the team at ARC. They helped us push the envelope in terms of page load times with ExpressionEngine. The complexity and amount of content was huge, it forced us to work with a team of dedicated staffers to plug in all of the necessary content and imagery. We were happy to have worked on this wonderful project and are proud of what we came up with in the end.

Trico Centre for Family Wellness, a community-operated fitness and wellness facility located in South Calgary, saw the importance of having a strong online presence when they contacted Kinoli. Their aging website was in need of a new design and an easy way to manage the content. Wordpress was their first option until Kinoli convinced them of the strengths of ExpressionEngine. After agreeing on a final design with Trico staff, Kinoli built out the website using ExpressionEngine, the client easily added all the content they wanted, they were able to create the menu the way they wanted their pages layed out, create all of the forms on the website through ExpressionEngine and can now fully manage their own website. Kinoli was happy to see them have success.Continue reading
